3 - Book
Your final project for this course will make use of both your creative writing as well as some the photos that you've taken during the course of the summer to create a book that captures your own unique identity and creative vision. To create this book we will use another on-line program--Blurb.com.
In general your self portait book should be an 80-100 page trade edition, including inner cover and table of contents. The price for a full color paperback edition for your book will be approximately $13-$18 depending upon the specific number of pages. If cost is an issue for you, you are also welcomed to create a black and white book, which will cost a bit less ($6-$7 depending upon the number of pages).
Before you order your book, be sure to check for discount coupons that will make the price of your book even cheaper. Go to google and search under: "blurb coupons."
One of the nice features of Blurb--besides its reasonable cost--is that the program is completely compatible with both Flickr, so you can easily download photos from this programs directly into your book. I would still recommend, however, that you keep backup copies of all your photographs on a flash drive just to be safe.
Your finishedbook will be graded in a holistic fashion. In general, I am looking for a work that is creatively designed, well written, and visually interesting. Points will be deducted from your total grade if there are excessive grammatical, typographical, or layout errors (intentional “errors” are fine) or if the quality of photographs included are weak. How you choose to put your book together and what specific creative elements you include is entirely up to you, but it should include a combination of your strongest writing and photos.
Sample copies of exceptional books produced by previous program participants are available in my office. Feel free to stop by any time to get ideas.
